“My name is ethan and i m gonna be even guest. Some some advice on on the nomination interview. Whether that be with your congressman or your state senator for a service academy. I am a replicant for the united states naval academy and went through last year receive my nomination.
But i didn t receive an appointment unfortunately the back this year and had my interview two days ago. So and i went a lot better than the first time that i believe so i ll confident and i think that s because i had a really great mentor who gave me some good advice that i m gonna do my best to really undo you guys so first thing that i believe is the biggest biggest thing. I m going to talk about is that this is something that you really have to want you can t want this for know bragging rights or the four hundred thousand dollar scholarship or not have to pay tuition and no student debt that can t be the reason. Why you want to go to a service academy.
If that s the reason why then stop forget about it it s this those interviews are designed to weed the people out like that so if you could genuinely say that you have a passion and a desire and nothing s gonna stop you gonna do it as many times as it takes then let s go that s awesome so what we re looking for so so so stay and keep watching my uh my my second my second piece of advice is mostly is gonna be about the interview questions so the second piece of advice is that in your answers you have to say more than. I m a patriot. You know think of how many candidates that they re interviewing they re interviewing up to hundred candidates who all are fighting for the exact same spot that you are you have to say something that stands out you have to stand out somehow you know think of all those kids that are being interviewed. Think of the the majority that know when they re asked why do you want to go to a service academy.
Oh. Because i ve always i ve always wanted to join the military. I m a patriot. I want to defend this country like you know that s great power to you god bless you.
But that s not gonna cut. It your answers have to be more than you know i m a patriot think about think about a service academy. They they surround themselves and pride themselves on a teamwork environment..
I mean that s that s what a service academy is that s what the military is it s it s all a giant team you have to be able to thrive and work in a teamwork environment and you need to let those interviewers know like that s i i perform my best when i m surrounded by a bunch of like minded individuals like that s what that that s what they re looking for they re looking for somebody who want who has reasons. Why they think that they are an ideal fit for a service academy. You know also think the service academy. They produce officers leaders this this right here is probably pretty basic.
But still i want to emphasize that you guys emphasize that your leaders you know they re gonna ask you questions about my last interview. I had about i think. 90 of my questions were why well i m more about me being a leader. They asked me you know my progression and how i ve became a better leader over time they asked me for time.
I was in a stressful environment as a leader they asked me when i was a follower and i had to follow somebody that was leading and that i didn t agree with and i said how how i responded to that they re gonna ask you a lot of questions like that and you need to have legitimate reasons as to why you know your leader. That s why i think people need to prepare themselves a lot more for the answer. I m a patriot. So big big two right there.
You know teamwork you were great in the teamwork environment and reasons. Why your leader and be able to answer any question they throw at you about that that s why it s really important that this is something you actually want because if this isn t something that you really genuinely want you think you re a good fit for you re not gonna have the those two good answers you or the answers to those two questions like you re not it s everything to seem robotic and it s just seem fake you re gonna freeze up you re gonna clam up it s just it s not gonna be good kind of leads me to my second second or third rather piece of advice. And that that has to do with familiarizing yourself with the questions. See this this i m not gonna say what a lot of people are gonna tell you i don t believe in rehearsing.
I didn t the reason. Why i didn t believe in or herzing. For my questions is because this is something that i really wanted to do like iii know i still know beyond..
I m at northern arizona university. Right now and i know beyond a shadow of a doubt that i will not be here next year. I will be at the naval academy and if by god s will that i m still here next year. Then i m reapplying the year after that because i know that i m eventually going to get in this is why i m here like this is you know i just i know that it s it s really hard to explain unless you re that kind of person.
So i never really sat down for hours you know and just just memorize my answers and studied because i knew that whatever question they threw at me. I would have a genuine answer for it because again this is something that i wanted you know i probably collectively over the span of two years towards to two different by two different years of applying and going through this process. Collectively. I ve probably studied for about 20 25 minutes being a hundred percent to anyone you know i you know i looked over the questions.
It s like some of the the recommended or popular questions and stuff. But i never sat down and wrote out the answers and it just looked at it and i was just just memorizing. It you know i never i never i never did that because i feel when you go back track a little bit. When you go into those interviews those interviewers they create and design their questions to branch.
You know if they don t go online. And they don t look at that question bank like alright. These are the questions we re going to ask them okay. It s not like that they ll probably ask you two questions that you can prepare for and the rest of the questions after that are based off of your answer to those questions and then then they ll ask questions based off of those answers.
And it just it continues to branch out. And there s no possible way that they will be able or you ll be able to prepare for i mean if there really isn t that s again back to back to the very first thing. I said that s why it s imperative that this is something that you really really want because if it s not if this is something that you you seriously want then you know when they start branching off and you realizing that you re about five ten minutes in and they ve only asked you one question you ve prepared for and the rest your answers you you ve been kind of stuttering and stuff you you know you think about you know where it s gonna go and stuff..
And how bad you re doing it then you start to clam up you start to sweat. You know you start to jitter look of the ceiling and stuff the lose eye contact and then you threw it out the window at that point. It s over it s done so you know i m not saying don t don t look at any questions at all like don t just like go in it s like yeah. I m gonna go in like you know at least look over it.
But don t be the person who studies like like you re studying for an exam or something don t be that person like look over it you know understand okay. These might be some of the questions. But 20 minutes over two years that s how long i ve studied for and you know i got my nomination last year. I got two nominations last year and i did i did even better this year.
So that s big turn think of something else you know i ll give you guys a couple examples to some of the questions they asked me so last year. They found out that you know my goal is to go into getting the teams and so they are asking me okay. What happens we give you the nomination and you make it through and everything you make it through buds you get out you get your team and you realize. It s a team of all girls.
What do you do how do you prepare for that question. There s an i guarantee. There s no question bank on earth. That has that question in there you know then they asked me after that same scenario you go through and everything and then you get to choose between a team of all guys and a team of all girls.
Which team do you choose see there s those are just examples of there being there s there s no way you can actually prepare so you trying and thinking you re preparing and you re studying for hours and stuff you re really you re hurting yourself. I feel you genuinely are and going off of that another another content to studying and rehearsing is you know when they do ask you that question you sound like a robot. When you re all you re doing is just citing from your head..
But you ve memorized off of a piece of paper. It s literally like you re reading off of paper. And you sound like a robot. And you re putting him to sleep.
It doesn t sound genuine that s why you know if there s something you really want your answers are gonna come naturally to you and then you re gonna seem like you re having a conversation you re not gonna be sweating. It ll be easy to be making eye contact with these guys you know so you know just just don t drill those questions into your head and your answers in your head. It s good. It s really gonna hurt you in the long run this videos getting kind of long so i m gonna cut it in a sec.
Give you guys some really basic stuff that i m sure you guys have all heard by still and put it out there be early obviously be early get a haircut shave wear deodorant please wear deodorant um when you go into that interview make sure you have however many people there are shake every one of their hands. Firm. No limp fish hands fish handshakes. You know even if you have to get one of those grippers make sure you get some like balm grip strength make sure you get some solid grip strength or a solid handshake and then you have eye contact with each handshake every single one yeah you know that s that s that shows what kind of adult you are it really does it that s that s the first thing that they judge you want is that handshake.
I m telling you 100. But yeah good luck this is all obviously my my personal advice. That s got me through two years of it may or may not work for you. But i just you know i recommend that you guys give it a shot but good luck.
