Today, highlandclearances.info would like to introduce to you Modding a Gamecube in 2020 – YouTube. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“Today we re going to put these into this hi everyone welcome back to the the shed today we re doing some mods on the nintendo gamecube. I ve got ntsc gamecube and i m going to install a couple of extra bits in there. We ve got that sd. 2 sp.
2. And we ve also got a xeno mod chip more about those in the video. So let s take a look ok. I ve been having a lot of fun lately with the hdmi adaptor on my pal gamecube.
Which is modded and but i m curious to see if there s any difference with the ntsc model so i ve dug out my old classic purple gamecube. This is the american version and it has a mod currently installed to be able to swap between american and japanese games. What we re going to do today. Is install a couple of extra bits are hard worth to allow us to play more this thing here is that sd.
2 sp. 2. This plugs into the bottom of the unit and allows you to install games onto an sd card. Which plops into here also we ve got the xeno mod chip.
So let s take that one out have a look this supposed to solder directly onto the board inside the gamecube. I ve had mixed successes with that in the past so we re gonna try it directly onto the board. If that doesn t work we can always add wires and see how that goes right opening up the gamecube can be a bit tricky. There s these four screws in here.
Which are called game bit screws. It s quite easy now to get hold of game bit screwdrivers to get those out. But whereas back in the day. When i used to do these mods on super nintendos and gamecube.
They were hard to come by so i actually made my own is my own homemade game bit screwdriver so i m just going to pop that in take out those four screws first of all with the screws out what we can do is lift the lid off and then we ll see what we ve got inside. Now the chip doesn t go all the way in at the bottom. I ll remove the side of the fan. The chip goes inside this area here.
So that s the part that we want to remove..
It s that you can get out easily now are the control board. Which just undoes on those two clips and then has a little ribbon cable. They ll come out let s all move that then there s the board at the back. Which would normally just clip straight off now in this case.
It s also got the wiring attached to the switch. So i think probably the easiest way of dealing with that is to undo the nut on the switch here on the side is the fan assembly. I should lift up and out of the way then we need to try and get this all undone. Yes.
I ve got three more screws at the side or screws. The other side. Let s turn around can at least follow those screws left off. Now we should be able to lift this off it ll feel like it s stuck because there s this connector here the plugs in there.
So that was what it feels like it s secured in place. So what we re left with is the drive unit here now be very careful at the laser. But what we re gonna do is undo these five screws six screws to remove the shield thinking right so with those screws removed. That s should just lift off and that will reveal before that we need so this is the z no chip.
It s got a number of holes that match up to what we ve got on here so needs to try and get that in position make sure i m not handling the laser and work out where these bits of need to go so. It sits on top like that you can tell you re in the right sort of spot because you cover in different components. And then you re going to need to attach that that s it i m going to try and do it directly to the board first thing. I m going to do is apply some flux onto all those points.
This will just allow the solder to flow that bit better we hope so looks on all that and back on place there and flux on the top surface is done. Where i put some there doesn t need solder ii. Just these points right i think well so. I m gonna do is secure.
It in place. While i am sol during my soldier and i has been heating up this whole time. So shouldn t be too difficult. It is tricky to get this positioning right.
Which is why i ve favor just using wires..
So it s actually is before. But i m feeling optimistic today so first of all there s this little point here above well this is as an 8 chip is a cheap one i got from ebay so just near the n8 bit. We ve got that point just one up low some solder on no avoid putting too much on these what i found is if you make sure that the solder looks like it s sunken. See that s above a little bit we heat put that on looks like this quite a lot of solder.
There leave that point going onto. There she always connected to the motherboard seems to be all pooling at the top. There there you go got a bit more there yeah. That s a touched it and this side here.
And this little dot here gets attached and that s all done. I mean that this is the problem with these chips is once it s in place. It s just guesswork. You don t you can t tell if it s connected on up you just have to do it and test.
It fortunately. What you can do is reassemble. Most of the unit. Without having to put all the screws back in just to test it so i m going to need to find a gamecube power supply.
I ll be back in a minute and we ll try it out right. So. The chip is now in place everything sold it in most of that is reassembled just without the screws and all we need to do is line up this connector with the connector on here. Which is easy to do because you ve got a little plastic pegs to line up the rest of the board.
Now when it comes to testing. I ve connected the power supply to the back of the fan. And i m ready to switch on but before i do that i m just gonna tilt. So you can see what s happening here.
What we re looking for is the gap. Just here to see if we get a red light on the chip. So if i switch on i don t know if you ll be able to see this there we go so it lights up flushes. Once should go off and then on again long as it stays on steady.
We should be okay all right so..
This is now all back together again. Which brings us onto the easy bit here. We ve got this sd. 2 sp.
2. Which has got four little connectors on each side much easier to install than the mod chip. This simply plugs in here you look for this face inside or this face outside so obviously the outside face points towards the outside edge of the gamecube that simply plugs in to the port. There.
And you can even put the serial port cover over the top again and that s it what that does is it allows you to play games from the sd card and now that we ve got the mod chip installed in here. It will allow us to play games from different regions. It ll allow us to play games that are burned onto the dvd r. Which means we can burn onto dvd r.
Piece of software called swiss. Which allows you to boot games from an sd card either through loader that goes into the the memory card slot. Which i ve tried before and is a little bit slow or in the case of what we re going to do here through this one which is much quicker. I ve had no issues with that so far so i ll go and try it out and see how it goes right so since filming all of that i ve given this a good test.
And it all works fine the mod chip works beautifully gains from different regions. All load and crucially the sd to sp2 is all installed and works fine. Now the thing with this is you can run all sorts of different software from it and since i did the last lot of filming. I have had something else arrive.
Which is this it s the gameboy player. This is a purple. One which you couldn t originally get in the uk this one from japan originally now these tend to get quite expensive because of the disk that s needed to run them. And this will plug into the bottom of the console.
And then there s the software that runs on disk that allows it to work and allows it to boot game boy and game boy advance games. I ve got the software for the uk version and having the mud chip installed in the ntsc gamecube means. I can run. My pal disc on that console.
Because it s now multi region..
That will work and it will work with that gameboy player even more conveniently if i m running a copy off swiss which i ve burned onto a disc and put that on i can actually put the disc image for the gameboy player boot software onto the sd card and run that from the menu are you still with me. So. That was the first thing that i did and i put a few bits up on my instagram. Which is joe bleep.
So if you re interested in taking a look and then someone told me something else now if i ve got my gameboy player. It s simply you take off the high speed port that plugs in there. And it s attached if i ve got the mod chip installed on here which i have it s possible to run homebrew games and listen they re called gpi gameboy interface. Which is a dick a piece of software that can run and in many ways particularly for running and game boy and game boy color games.
It s actually much better than the original gamecube software. So i ve tried that out as well and it s great. And what i ve got now is on my sd card that s inside here. I ve got the image of the original gameboy player software.
I ve also got the gbi. So now i ve got the option and all i need to do is keep the swiss disc in there boot. It up and all the games that i ve got i can have just the iso so if those on a sd card. I can have the gameboy player on there i can get other homebrew and things like that to play around with so it s been pretty good music right.
While i appreciate the video is a little bit all over the place. I ve ended up with my ultimate gamecube here. I can play whatever i want icon on my chiptune software through the gameboy port. I can play whatever games.
I want i can run homebrew. I can play it through my main tv with my hdmi at that different keiko that you can see one of my other videos look at it it s gorgeous this purple cube is one of my favourite consoles ever and now i can play it with my current setup. Just as easily as i ever could it s great music. ” .
